Chapter Six

Sophia arranged to meet Michael, Hailey, Sylvia and Bradley at The Steakhouse Grill on Union Street. The restaurant had just recently opened in the city and had earned rave reviews in area newspapers. The atmosphere was casual, so Sophia fit right in when she pushed her way through the door wearing black leather boots, low-waist dark denims, a wide black belt and a burnt orange rib-knit turtleneck sweater.

Because she wasn’t “on the clock,” she felt free to coat her eyelashes with mascara and highlight her cheekbones with a little blush. Tinted gloss had her lips glistening. She’d never been one to wear loads of makeup, but accentuating her best features always made her feel good about herself. She’d curled the ends of her hair and let it fall loose around her shoulders.

She told the hostess she was with the Taylor party, and the teen escorted her through the busy establishment. The sound of clattering cutlery mingled with the buzz of dozens of conversations while the smoky scent of grilling beef hung heavy in the air. Sophia inhaled deeply and realized she was hungry.

Turning a corner in the main dining room, her gaze homed in on Michael immediately. He was laughing at something one of his parents had said. He looked relaxed, and devilishly sexy.

She’d floated around all day, revisiting the heated closeness she and Michael had shared before she’d left his condo. Even Karen had noticed the change in her when she’d stopped by to pick up Flicker. Her assistant had commented that Sophia was beaming and had poked and prodded for the cause. Sophia had sidestepped her efforts and had told Karen that she was merely enjoying her weekend off. She hadn’t told her assistant that she was having dinner with Michael and his family, and she wasn’t quite sure why, really.

When there were still five yards between her and the table, Michael chanced to glance up. And their gazes locked. His laughter faded as he studied her from the top of her head to the tips of her booted toes.

He pulled the crimson linen napkin from his lap and stood when she reached him. “Hello,” he murmured.

She greeted him with a grin. “Hi. I’m not late, am I?” She knew she was right on time. But her heart was beating too fast, and her thoughts seemed to race through her head at alarming speed. She smiled at Bradley and Sylvia. “How is everyone? Enjoying your visit?”

“Very much,” Bradley said as Sophia slid into the empty chair waiting for her.

She was keenly aware that Michael eased back down into his chair and dropped his linen napkin across his thighs.

“We didn’t leave the house all day.” Sylvia set down her glass of water. “And that was fine with us. All we wanted to do was catch up with Michael and get acquainted with our grandbaby. We’ve had a wonderful visit.”

Hailey’s carrier was tucked between the proud grandparents.

“I see our baby girl is snoozing again,” Sophia said. “She certainly is
